Ascension Into The Future Of Cross Border Business: Recap of Third Cross Border Summit

Saturday , April 21, 2018: Shenzhen, China

For 2 days, from Friday April 20 to Saturday April 21, Over 200 e-commerce business owners from both inside and outside of China assembled to take part in the third annual Cross Border Summit. Hosted by the organizations, Global From Asia, it was a conference to bring together top e-commerce business owners from all corners of the globe.

With over 40 top experts in the industry sharing strategies for optimizing your Amazon FBA listing to building an international brand and internet marketing (SEO) — the audience was filled with information and advice on how to take their e-commerce businesses to the next level.

Many international speakers had their first experience in China and Shenzhen. Brian Johnson , CEO and founder of PPC Scope , an American Amazon PPC expert had arrived to Shenzhen, China for the first time to speak at this conference. He was pleasantly surprised by the modern style of the city and the very positive minded sellers in the audience. Will Tjerlund, a top Amazon seller from Minneapolis, Minnesota also returned to share his story on scaling his business to over 2600 products in under six months . He enjoyed sharing his knowledge and the data he has gathered from his years on e-commerce and working with multi-million dollar brands in his consulting firm Goal Consulting.

The summit held a panel where we brought top international sellers such as Danny McMillan, host of Seller Sessions, Anthony Lee COO of Six Leafs, and Meir Simhi from Brand Masters to share the perspectives of the Western side of the sellers mind. Multiple sessions were quite amazing where we took top sellers and experts from both China and overseas and learned their tactics and strategies in a “head-to-head” format.

Michael Michelini, founder and host of the Global From Asia podcast said “We are so happy to bring together top leaders from around the world in the cross-border business industry. This is not your normal corporate gathering, we are here to make business deals, share actionable knowledge, and build long term relations with leaders around the world. We are growing to a new level as the industry matures and governments adopt new and more strict policies.”

“I skipped the after party in the first night to implement what I learned. Very valuable and actionable advice is what I would say this conference is all about.” Said Rolands, a Latvian B2B distributor based in Taiwan who is venturing into B2C e-commerce.

Chinese attendees also enjoyed their time at the third summit: My company is a cross border ecommerce business in China. It is my first time in Cross border Summit. First of all it is a great chance to know the different people from different countries. A good chance to know what foreign people think of China.” said Vicky from YKS Group.

More big sellers from Singapore were present “I definitely recommend coming to the summit to learn, enjoy the food, and build great relationships” said Daniel, an Amazon seller who had his first Cross Border Summit experience.

A highlight of this year’s summit was the announcement of the summit’s expansion into Latin America, with a major trade show planned for Q3 2019. On top of that, a new virtual reality China tour experience was debuted — so people from around the world can enter a Chinese factory, check it out at https://www.globalfromasia.com/vr/ and get in on the ground floor for a brand new way to find and verify Chinese factories.

GetGoogleSeo-5 Easy Steps to Improve Content and Link-building Efforts

“Paying attention to the basics and day-to-day technical SEO problems that appear when promoting a website is the only way to achieve higher SEO results,”– says Shenzhen Marketing Agency GetGoogleSEO’s general manager Yuriy Tarasenko.

Are you trying to find some easy and clever SEO wins for the upcoming year? Well, we all do. And we’re certain that now it is the right time to let go all the complications in your SEO struggles by doing some SEO-style spring cleaning.

Making up brand-new content can be exciting, and creating link connections can lead to the great results, while some technical challenges may seem to be more complicated. And so, they get to be ignored unless they’ve caused some problems, and only then we realize that they are important just as much. Thus, in some cases the best way is just to go back to the basics of SEO.

To improve our SEO results, we shall take care of technical SEO essentials in the first place, long before they become an issue.

What exactly are the tactical basics that we shall enhance in order to improve our link-building scores and content development? Here are those 5 fundamentals.

Meta descriptions

We all know that well-written meta descriptions can significantly boost click-through rates from organic search, and still, once it’s been written, most of developers never return to it again in order to change and improve. And this is so wrong.

When it comes to websites that are vigorously promoted, their content is modified and updated regularly, so that meta description that seemed perfect a year ago (or a month ago even), may no longer be a good fit.

And even when the content stays the same and, probably, never will be changed, alterations in search engine behavior may force us to change meta descriptions accordingly.

For instance, in December, 2017, maximum length of search results snippets was increased by Google from 160 to 320 characters. As we know, snippet content itself is taken out from descriptions and on-page content, so obviously anyone who hasn’t changed the descriptions accordingly will lose the benefits of adding more engaging description (simply put, there’ll be a huge 160-characters gap containing relevant content and keywords, between you and your competitors, whose websites have been updated, and so they’ll get better click-through rates).

More

Internal links. Webpage speed.

“Paying attention to the basics and day-to-day technical SEO problems that appear when promoting a website is the only way to achieve higher SEO results,” – says Shenzhen marketing agency GetGoogleSEO’s general manager Yuriy Tarasenko. What exactly are the tactical basics that we shall enhance in order to improve our link-building scores and content development? In the “5 easy steps to improve content and link-building efforts. Part 1” we’ve already talked about first 3 wins over our SEO routines: accurate meta descriptions, responsive design and correctly working external links. Now it’s time to reveal 2 last but not the least of our 5 secret weapons of everyday SEO.

Internal links

As well as outbound links, internal ones eventually can end up leading to a missing/irrelevant pages, which is caused by various changes on your website, such as creating new content and modifying/deleting the outdated one. Problems caused by that, surely, won’t be as serious as the ones caused by the irrelevant outbound links, and still it can significantly affect SEO results and spoil visitors’ impression. Luckily, all those inconveniences can be fixed rather quick and fairly easy (well, how “easy and quick” exactly depends on the size of your website). As we’ve already mentioned talking about outbound links, your internal links are expected to point out relevant pages right away, without redirection.

Goal: The same way you did with your outbound links, check all the inbound links on your website to be certain that they all point to a relevant page directly. This will boost positive user experience which can be used as a ranking signal.

Shekou International School – A Community of High Quality Learning

Shekou International School is one of the most well-known international schools in Shenzhen. It is a not-for-profit private school which funnels all proceeds back into the school, which is clearly seen in the state-of-the-art facilities which are renovated every year. Established in 1988, SIS has a reputation for high quality education for expatriate children from around the world, and it prides itself on its Secondary Program and exceptional level of university acceptances.

If you ask the students what they like about SIS, they’ll tell you it’s the small, caring learning community where teachers and students form relationships and share a love of knowledge. They’ll also tell you that at SIS students have an opportunity to take on projects, service learning and challenges that they might not be able to tackle in a larger school.

Staff will tell you that SIS is a unique community because of the exceptional students, and the fact that their colleagues are passionate educators is a given. 75% of the faculty have a master’s degree or higher and it is not uncommon to see SIS staff presenting at leadership conferences throughout Asia.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Program is studied at both ends of the school – the Primary Years Program (PYP) is taught from pre-Kindergarten to Grade 5; the Diploma Program (DP) is taught in Grades 10 and 11. The curriculum in Grades 6 to 9 is based on the US Core Education Standards, and adapted to extend children’s learning from the Primary Years Program to the Diploma Program. Focused around enquiry-based learning, the IB program gives students a firm foundation in the PYP, during which they learn how to ask the right questions, how to find answers, how to collect, collate, organise and analyse data, make interpretations and conclusions and then evaluate their findings. Students become eager, autonomous learners by Grade 5, which stands them in excellent stead for their progress onto the DP course.

The aim of the Diploma Program is essentially to prepare students for university. It is an exam-based program which matches university expectations from around the world, and is linked directly to the enquiry-based learning students have done in previous years. Alongside six subject areas – Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals and Societies, Sciences, Mathematics, and The Arts – within which students can choose one or two courses, there are also three core areas of study which every student has to complete. The DP core aims to broaden students’ educational experience and challenge them to apply their knowledge and skills.

The Theory of Knowledge (ToK) is possibly the most important aspect of the DP core skills students learn at SIS. This course teaches students about the philosophy of knowledge and education, it explains how different people learn and produce new knowledge, and how that knowledge is used and communicated. The Theory of Knowledge links to all curriculum areas studied, as well as any future studies the students may complete. It is often a favourite subject of the students as it gives them an opportunity to critically examine different topics, have discussions with their peers and teachers and talk about their own opinions on a range of matters.

The second core area is Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS). This can be conducted as three separate projects or combined into one which includes all the elements. The aim is for the students to become involved in the local community in an innovative and productive way, by using their imagination and creativity to design and carry out a project over 100 hours supported, of course, by the staff at SIS. Robert Stearns, the Head of School, has a great deal of experience in this area, and has guided students in projects such as arranging for refugees in Hong Kong to learn how to kayak.

The final core area in the IB Diploma Program is the extended essay. This enables students to demonstrate and put into practice many of the skills they have learnt at SIS by allowing them to choose their own research question, plan their line of enquiry, carry out their research and present their conclusions. The extended essay is also an impressive piece of writing that can be used to aid university applications.

In addition to the study programs throughout the school, SIS also runs a ‘Week Without Walls’ program of their own design. During this, students from Grade 4 to Grade 12 spend a week at another location either in Hong Kong, mainland China or Malaysia. This enables the students to put into practice their skills as global citizens, as well as giving them invaluable cultural and adventure experiences.

A strong advisory program throughout the school ensures that all students’ needs are provided for, whether academic, social or emotional. Paula Brunning is the High School Counsellor at SIS and part of her purview is to help the students find the best university match – not just within the country they want to live or the subjects they want to study, but also which university would suit their personality and character the most. The acceptance rate is extraordinary. One hundred percent of students from SIS are accepted into university and most of them get into their first choice of university, whether they apply to the USA, the UK, Canada, other European universities, Korea, Australia or Hong Kong.

The students themselves believe that SIS is a great school with a rewarding study program. One student explained that the IB Program exposes you to different subjects, is challenging and rigorous, and it makes you a better critical thinker. Other students share similar positive opinions: The teachers are all caring and professional and have a good relationship with the students; SIS has a comfortable environment and is student driven; it has small classes where everyone is friends and it feels more like a family; it’s easier to find your own voice at SIS than in a bigger school; the environment pushes you to be a better student.

In a rapidly growing city where the choices for our children’s education are ever-widening, SIS provides an established and reliable study program which ensures students have the best possible opportunities in the future.

Submitting Great Résumés to Companies on ShenzhenParty.com Jobs Section

you-are-hired-resume-tips

When you are interested in a job at one of the multinational companies posting jobs on the most popular Shenzhen English job board, keep the following advice in mind when submitting your résumé to companies that maybe hiring.

What to Include

Attention to detail goes a long way in landing that next job. Here are some points that will help single to recruiters that you are a job seeker who should be considered.

integrated-marketing-campaign

Add an Executive Summary

The “résumé Objective” is out and the “Executive Summary” is in. Ditch the objective line and get a nice looking header on your résumé that describes you and add some keywords that also describe you. This is your 2 second elevator pitch to someone reading your résumé.

Include Months and Years you worked

Your work history and education history should be accounted for completely. Gaps in time on your CV raise red flags. Make sure you account for the time. Note that it is typical for Chinese to jump around frequently from job to job. This does not look well in a western managed company’s eyes so it is best if you have a solid explanation as to why you changed so frequently.

Double the number of ‘%’ and ‘¥’ signs

Be sure to show potential employers that the work you did contributed to the bottom or top line in dollar value terms or percentage terms. Your job should have KPIs and you should be able to write on your résumé how you directly affected those KPIs. The best situation is that every line item on your résumé shows by how much you moved the needle.

Expand Abbreviations

Companies use a lot of jargon and it is best to include full word and the acronym in your CV. The abbreviation may not be the same from company to company or industry to industry and since recruiters put your résumé in a candidate database you want to cover your bases on which search terms might be used to search for your CV.

sales-job-description

Customize your résumé towards the job description

For each job you submit your résumé to you should customize your résumé to the job description of that job. Sending a generic résumé will decrease your chances of landing the job.

Use the same terminology

Use the keywords that are used in the job description. This is the terminology human resources will be using to search their database for candidates and if you use the same terminology they are likely to recognize that you paid attention to the résumé.

Customize your accomplishments towards the job

Go line by line through the job description and make sure that to the best extent possible your job description has points which complement the job description and requirements. Take out unnecessary points that do not relate to the job description. Remember less is more.

Interests

Put some interests at the bottom of your résumé but try to put interests where you accomplished something such as “organized running club in my school”

Spelling & Grammar

Correct spelling is of utmost importance. Make sure you use spellcheck and grammar check in the English version of Word this function is invaluable.

Use past tense for your job experience and accomplishments.

check-punctuation-hand-stamp

Punctuation

Make sure you do proper English punctuation. In Chinese punctuation does not have spaces after it. In English spaces are required and if I see a résumé where the candidate has not put spaces after punctuation I am unlikely to hire them because their English skills are probably not up to snuff and they don’t have an attention to detail.

You can use our language exchange section to find someone to practice your English with and even maybe get someone to proofread your résumé.

Files formats

Your résumé should be submitted in the following formats
– PDF (.pdf)
– Word (.doc or .docx the later lets the employer know you are using the latest version of Office)

Do not submit your résumé as an Excel document. This lets the employer know you are using an online Chinese résumé portal and are not customizing your résumé for the specific job. Your résumé will not stand out and I have never seen a résumé that does not have punctuation and spelling errors when submitted in Excel.
