Experience First Class Hospitality In Shenzhen Northwest With Courtyard by Marriott

Ms. Yang greets everyone she meets with a warm smile. It is part of her welcoming personality that has a positive influence on those who surround her. Be it in her professional or personal life.

With over 20 years of experience in hospitality, Ms. Yang understands well how to run a hotel. She set about her hospitality career with Jin Jiang Hotels and has held management positions in international hotel groups in Hong Kong and Taiwan. In 2018, Ms. Yang was invited to rejoin Marriott International and continue her career with Courtyard by Marriott Shenzhen Northwest.

Having worked specifically in the F&B industry for 15 years, Ms. Yang offers genuine insight into how the industry works and understands the sort of decisions that need to be made to make a bar or restaurant successful. Now, she has extended that same experience and success to hotel operations.

When she first joined Marriott International 10 years ago, Ms. Yang set herself a clear philosophy; to offer quality service and to do so consistently. She would follow this philosophy no matter what department she was working in and no matter where the hotel she was working at was located.

It is a philosophy that has served her well in the hospitality industry in China and it is an industry that has changed a lot in a short period of time. Ms. Yang gave her opinion on the current transformations, challenges, and opportunities in the Chinese hospitality industry.

“China’s hospitality industry has developed rapidly in the past few years, with a number of international hotels being introduced into the local market, while the local hotels have also shown substantial growth. The major challenge right now is the shortage of well-trained hospitality talents. With the phenomenal industry growth, we must provide quality training to our staff to discover talented employees and to explore their potential.”

“Today, we should consider how we could offer unique products by analyzing the market prospects through our products and branding. Will we be able to adopt new technology in order to meet and exceed guests’ expectations? We are no longer able to focus on price competition alone. Most importantly, the success of a hotel is based on the care given to its guests, the flexibility offered in personalized guest experiences, and the sincere hospitality service of our staff.”

“I am very grateful that throughout my career I have been led by a number of brilliant leaders who have taken the time to offer me guidance and advice. Now that I am General Manager, I expect my team to respect me not because of my title, but because of my capabilities. When my team needs help to improve, I avoid treating them harshly, as this will not achieve any positive result. In the hospitality industry, mutual respect and trust is the most important ingredient in any successful team that wants to achieve their common goal.”

Combining modern design and innovative technology, Courtyard by Marriott Shenzhen Northwest provides international visitors with comfortable and personalized hospitality experience.

Well situated in the greater Airport area, the hotel is close to both Shenzhen International Airport and Shenzhen World Exhibition And Convention Center (the world’s largest exhibition center, which will open in 2019).

The hotel has 235 stylish and spacious guest rooms offering a picturesque view over the growing and modern surrounding area. All rooms feature an ergonomic working space, high-speed internet connectivity, and a 55-inch LED TV with satellite channels.

For dining facilities, the all-day Pavilion restaurant features a buffet breakfast and both international and local delicacies for lunch and dinner in a dynamic yet refined ambience. The Chinese restaurant, Chao Yi Court Fine Kitchen, is renowned for its authentic Chiu Chow and Cantonese cuisines. The six elegant-designed private dining suites are available for meetings, family gatherings, and special occasions. The Lounge offers a further option for business talk or relaxing. Choose from a large variety of snacks, desserts, coffee, tea, wine, liquor, and cocktails.

Courtyard by Marriott Shenzhen Northwest boasts a total of 1,600 square meters of banqueting space for business meetings, private parties, or wedding ceremonies. A pillar-less ballroom measuring 800 square meters is equipped with a built-in HD LED display and there are 10 multi-functional meeting rooms that can cater to your every need with built-in roll-down screens and projectors.

Between the modern facilities, excellent customer service, and the leadership of Ms. Yang, Courtyard by Marriott Shenzhen Northwest is well-tailored to meet any guest requirements.

An exceptional six-hand chef dinner at Residence G Shenzhen

Residence G Shenzhen hosted an exclusive and exceptional dining event last November 29th with attending guests being the property’s owners and top VIP clients. Chef de Cuisine Sylvain Royer teamed up with the talented executive chefs Hervé Frerard and Danny Xie to create an exclusive one-night-only culinary experience for the diners.

Chefs in the kitchen
                                                                     Chefs in the kitchen

The Chef Dinner featuring six hands aimed to showcase the three chefs’ culinary skills and creativity to offer a bespoke menu of six-course degustation which introduced French produce and recipes that used to be consumed by French Royalty during the monarchy era. The ‘French Royal’ themed alfresco event took place on the ClubHouse restaurant’s terrace with views over Nanshan. From gold foiled invitations to lavish table dress up and menus being rolled into royal announcement style, no detail was spared. At the terrace, diners can experience a chic and casual environment where they can socialize and appreciate the spectacular night view of South China’s buzzing metropolis, Shenzhen, making it the preferred venue for such events.

Frenchman Sylvain has worked in several Michelin star restaurants in France before entering the hospitality industry in 1993. A creative and passionate culinary maestro, Sylvain gained two Michelin stars during his career in gastronomy and has helmed the kitchen of award-winning restaurants including Scarlett in Hong Kong, Bangkok, and sister restaurant Ginett in Singapore. His trips around the world have gained him a wealth of experience across Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the US. He believes in Farm to Table concept where the use of the right and fresh products is key hence a preference for organic and locally grown products.

French native Hervé is a culinary innovator, cookbook writer and a passionate industry leader. He is one of Thailand’s most revered chefs and the President of the Disciples Escoffier Thailand Delegation, an organization dedicated to the gastronomic art. Hervé is currently leading the kitchen team of Ginett Wine Bar & restaurant in Singapore. Danny is the Executive Chef of Residence G Shenzhen. He has worked for over 18 years in many high-end luxury hotels and is an expert in making delicious seafood with fresh seasonal ingredients like fresh herbs and olive oil.

With beliefs in camaraderie and collaboration amongst industry professionals, Hervé and Danny joined Sylvain for the six-hand dinner. The concept of six-hand chef dinner, in which a chef invites another two chefs to create a menu together, has lately gained popularity. It offers the opportunity to learn from and interact with other outstanding chefs from around the world. The collaboration encourages innovation and teaches the chefs to embrace new ideas.

                                                                      Guests at table

The three chefs’ rendition of six French traditional courses offered diners an authentic taste of France with fresh and seasonal ingredients. Commencing with the appetizer Amuse Bouche, the dinner tantalized diners’ taste buds with Organic Egg with Black Winter Truffle, Langoustine Tart Soufflé, Stripped Cod Fillet with Potato Crust and Roasted Anjou Pigeon. They ended with the French dessert, Caramelized Apple Tatin. A special selection of wines was designed and paired with the dishes throughout the night. A definite resounding success for diners and organizers alike.

Enjoy a Night Out With The Fam in Hard Rock Hotel

Who needs a reason to go out and stay in a nice hotel with the family?

Mike’s Blog 169

Pretty much this is great timing. I need a night out – and as always – mixing family and business. Hard Rock Cafe (and hotel) is opening up in Shenzhen and invited us over. Thanks Matt from for the connection, Hard Rock is of course world famous and it’s awesome to see them come to Shenzhen, China.

So why did I come over for a night in the city I live in?

Well, I was invited – to discuss business! And why not have the family come along and enjoy.

We are discussing with them to host future Global From Asia events here – as it has all the amenities as a resort. Its up in Mission Hills and if you are coming up here, may as well stay the night (about 30 minutes drive from downtown).

Roaming around the hotel, there is a nice lounge (where I’m writing this blog from) and a rooftop pool and meeting area / networking area. Will be checking out the conference rooms later and brainstorming some ideas for GFA events here.

Not sure what you think, but I am happy to be integrating my family life and business life – the kids really have enjoyed roaming around the resort, and are able to try out the kid’s play area while I have my meeting. I think complete separation of personal and business is close to impossible as a business owner. I guess I could have left them at home and came up on my own but I would have felt guilty!!

Life can be grey, but that is what makes it beautiful (in my opinion). I used to seek the black and the white – the answers – of life – but what I have found is that there will always be this overlap if you are taking a non conventional path in your career / life.

Ok, time to try out this hotel’s breakfast and see the conference rooms, cheers!

So this vlog extended a bit – after the Hard Rock experience – Wendy dropped me off at the Hong Kong border and I headed down to Mike The Greek’s wedding in Hong Kong. Time is really flying I met him (via Brian Tam) back in Shanghai in 2012! Now he is living and doing his PHD in Hong Kong and married. So I had to attend – even if it was “deep” in Hong Kong (I didn’t realize it was almost on the furthest point away from China – down near Chai Wan). A quick wedding but got me teary eyed a bit – they are so happy together.

And at that wedding, I got to hang out with Doug and Witty – who I was best man at his wedding and featured their wedding back on Mike’s Blog episode 19 – wow – like 150 episodes ago. So happy to be able to document some of this insane travels and international experience.

So this blog turned into a “one day” experience into a 2 day. Hua Qiang bei tour, to Hard Rock cafe to a greek wedding in Hong Kong. Life can be very simple, or very complex. I choose the more complex way.

What about you? Are you looking for the normal path, or a more “complex” path. There is the saying – your NETwork is your NET-worth. For me I feel definitely rich in that experience, so many amazing friends around the world.

Now back to the work week and grind. Creating more content.

Find The Soul Of The City Hidden In Café

If you are searching for the soul of a city, you can find it hidden in a café. No matter how big a city is, if it is without cafés, then it is like a tree that is hollow at its core. There is a void in its heart.

Decameron coffee store photo

A café is the meeting point of the people of the city. It is where everything about the place and its people are told and retold countless times over. From the customers to the coffee baristas, each have their own unique tale to tell, which all come together to form one common thread.

Steaming coffee machine

Like the character of Rick Blaine says in the movie Casablanca, “Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine.” The same can be said of a café. They are filled with strangers who have connections that they simply do not know yet, and all it can take is a random encounter to change that.

The coffee that is served is irrevocably entwined with geography, history, culture, arts, and above all else, the personal connections we make every day.

sophisticated coffee machine

From Paris to London and from Seattle to Melbourne, cafés have been where some of the greatest literature is crafted and where some of the most groundbreaking innovations are born.

Decameron Coffee, which started right here in Shenzhen, is one such café. Inspired by Giovanni Boccaccio, every cup of Decameron Coffee is made with passion and creativity.

Deep into Coffee

There is an art to testing coffee; every espresso has a story to be told, there are emotions to be expressed, flavors to be savored, and long lasting fragrances to be shared. It is through this process that Decameron Cofee aims to achieve its simple goal to create “The best cup of coffee”.

So, how do we define this “best cup of coffee”?

coffee utensil

coffee grounds

The best cup of coffee should introduce itself gradually through its fragrance, revealing its taste subtly with each sip. To achieve this, we must begin at the source with the planting, picking, roasting and processing of the coffee beans we use. Through it, we can feel refreshed from the Ethopia Yirgacheffe, enjoy the aroma of the Indonesia Golden Mandolin’s fragrance, and savor the Costa Rica Beethoven.

bottle ice coffee

The best cup of coffee is an unwavering commitment to the highest standard in every cup every day, and it’s the relentless pursuit to keep improving. At least 3 times a day, our baristas test the espresso to ensure every cup meets the required standard.

Magpie where food meets art in the Oct Loft art area

Written by Mark
Revised by Brent Deverman

OCT Loft is known for creativity and art galleries. What if that art was applied to the food there? If an artist combined two cuisines together would he/she think to choose Chinese Northeastern (Dongbei) flavors and western food? Let’s face it, Shenzhen has so many places to eat, picking one can drive the sanest person crazy – but when I heard about the opening night of this new trendy artsy restaurant – Magpie – we had to check it out.

The team behind the concept

Tucked away in the beautiful surroundings of OCT LOFT, the Magpie restaurant – brainchild of head chef Cadence Gao – is ideally situated, serving traditional Dong Bei food styled with a contemporary western edge – the perfect escape from the hectic city lifestyle.

We heard about the team creating a restaurant something like 3 years ago so it is great to see that it has finally come together and that their skills all compliment each other to build a concept that is greater than the sum of the individual parts.

The decoration and ambiance

The first thing that grabs your attention is the relaxing ambiance and modern decoration which gel together perfectly. The staff were genuine and friendly and even though busy, were tentative and helpful.

The food was succulent and juicy, each dish freshly prepared and cooked to perfection. – My favourite dishes included “Who killed my duck?” – “Belly full of Scallops” and “The Obligatory Steak” but to name a few.

The menu is seasonal and may not be the same when you visit as they were just finishing their winter menu.

Maybe it was the attention to detail, the mouth-watering food or the delicious candyfloss cocktails that made my visit so memorable – whatever it was, the entire dining experience at the Magpie restaurant was exquisite and I look forward to visiting again soon.

“Sports Connects, the China Sports Forum”

Weibo Sports, Mission Hills, Mailman, ONE Championship and Branded team up to deliver  “Sports Connects, the China Sports Forum”

Event scheduled for 26th – 28th November 2018, at Mission Hills, China

[HONG KONG – 22 March 2018] Weibo (NASDAQ: WB), a leading social media company in China, and Branded, the Hong Kong-based event producer responsible for the highly successful Sports Matters, YouTube FanFest and ‘All That Matters’ conference series, today announced the second installment of Sports Connects, one of the largest events dedicated to China’s burgeoning sports industry.

As one of the partners of the event, Mailman will help to promote and market the event through its extensive China network and invite key speakers, attendees and local media.

Sports Connects” will unite the key players in China’s rapidly growing sports economy alongside the powerbrokers from the international community, providing insight, connections and business opportunities in China’s sports industry.

The first event welcomed over 500 industry leaders from China and across the world to Mission Hills at what was regarded as the best sports conference ever produced in China. Even more are expected to attend the 2018 forum to discuss a number of key themes, including:

  • China in China: The power of the domestic consumer
  • Exporting China: The opportunities for Chinese powerhouses overseas
  • The World Turns to China: The engine behind global sport industry growth

The majority of China’s sports industry’s growth is directly tied to government intervention. The Chinese government plans to build a US$ 813 billion sports industry by 2025. It is estimated that technology, mostly online media platforms, is central to the market’s growth, with 82% of sports fans coming from cities other than Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen.

Zhe Zhang, Senior Director of Hot Topics and Sports at Weibo commented:

“We are very pleased to co-host the Sports Connects sports forum. Weibo has been committed to linking events, clubs and players with hundreds of millions of users through social platforms; Weibo also looks forward to helping China strengthens its links with the global sports industry.”

Sports Connects will once again be hosted at the world’s largest golf facility, Mission Hills in Dongguan, Southern China, a fully-integrated luxury resort spanning 22 square-kilometers and 12 golf courses in the heart of China’s “Greater Bay Area”. The founder of Mission Hills Group, the late Dr. David Chu, was a pioneer in the development of China’s sports industry and widely regarded as the ‘father of golf’ in China. He also played a major role in Beijing’s successful bid for the 2008 Olympic Games.

Tenniel Chu, Group Vice Chairman of Mission Hills is delighted to be hosting the second chapter of this highly-anticipated event:

“Since the last China Sports Forum at Mission Hills, we have continued our significant investment into the development of sports and tourism in China, including the announcement of ground-breaking partnerships with FC Barcelona and the NBA. Being the home of Sports Connects is very much part of our mission to bring China to the world and the world to China. We look forward to welcoming the world back to Mission Hills China in November.”

Victor Cui, CEO International of Presenting Sponsors ONE Championship said:

“We are excited to be a partner of this industry leading conference and share our experiences as Asia’s largest global sports media property. It’s a fantastic gathering of experts and it’s going to be a must-attend event for sports business people.”

Jasper Donat, CEO of Branded commented:

“Branded specialises in connecting communities. Bringing the Sports Matters fraternity back to China is a crucial step in our mission to build the foundation for a sustainable Asian sports industry.  With so many of the world’s largest sporting events heading to Asia over the coming years, 2018 is a big year in global sport and China is in the driving seat.”

Andrew Collins, Founder & CEO, Mailman said:

“2017 was a year of consolidation for China’s sports industry; it was less about headlines as it was about building real business models for China’s sports media industry. In 2018, we expect to see more organisations, leagues, clubs and players coming out to China, and Sports Connects presents the perfect opportunity to bring the industry together.”

[Haikou, Hainan Province, China – 16 March 2018] In the mid-1930s, a celebrated German aviator called Wulf-Diether Graf zu Castell-Rüdenhausen flew over China with his Leica camera, recording stunning landscapes, natural features and historical monuments. For more than 80 years his photos have remained undiscovered and unseen – until now.

On April 7, Mission Hills Group, owners and operators of the world’s largest golf and leisure facility, will launch the ”China Flug” (meaning China Flight) photography exhibition at the luxury Mission Hills Haikou resort on the tropical Chinese island of Hainan.

On display will be several precious and historical photos which have remained unseen to the world for many years, amazingly found at Castell’s family home. These photographs record incredible images of old China through the power of aerial photography.

Visitors will experience a special exhibition encapsulating the past and blazing a new trail towards a brighter future in photography. They will witness a side to China not seen before as China’s beauty and diversity are displayed for all to see.

Castell has become a legend, not just because of his aerial photography but also because of the precious images he captured. With his Leica camera he was able to capture China through a tumultuous time. He flew over cities, countryside, rolling hills, ports and residential areas including riverbeds and farmlands which were previously undocumented. He was able to encapsulate the spirit of the time with great style and panache and will be remembered as an amazing pioneer both as an aviator and a photographer.

The “China Flug” exhibition will run from April 7 for 45 days at Mission Hills Centreville in Haikou.  Entry will be free, in celebration of the 30th anniversary of Hainan’s status as a province.

“We are honoured to team up with Mission Hills – like Leica, a family-owned business and a pioneer in its field – to bring these significant photos of China to the Chinese public,” said Chairman of the Supervisory Board Leica Camera AG, Dr Andreas Kaufmann, owner of the Ernst Leitz Archiv- und Museums gemeinnützige GmbH.
“China Flug is an example of how Leica captured the past one hundred years of human history. It is also a showcase of the long friendship built between Germany and China,” added Karin Kaufmann, Art Director of Leica Gallery International and Chairwoman of the Ernst Leitz Archiv- und Museums gemeinnützige GmbH.

“Mission Hills Haikou, the most visited tourist attraction in Hainan, is delighted to partner with Leica, with more than 100 years of history, to create yet another first for China and for the world,” added Tenniel Chu, Group Vice Chairman of Mission Hills. “As China’s international tourism island, it is befitting that Hainan should be the location to unveil these remarkable aerial photos of China that have remained a secret for so long. It is our gift to the province and its people to celebrate Hainan’s 30th anniversary!”

Sun Ying, director of the Hainan Provincial Tourism Development Commission commented: “Visitors to Hainan continue to grow year on year and the province received more than 67.45 million tourists in 2017, up 12.2 per cent year-on-year, contributing 81 billion yuan in revenue. Mission Hills has been at the forefront of tourism in Haikou for close to a decade and the China Flug exhibition will be another hugely popular attraction for visitors to Hainan.”

Muji Launches First Ever Hotel in Shenzhen

Japanese retailer Muji have built a global reputation for their minimalistic designs with no-logo policy and for an emphasis on recycling and avoiding waste in both production and packaging. It is a corporate approach that has made them a market leader and given them a style that is instantly recognizable.

Until recently, Muji had focused on the retail market, but this month they caught the attention of the world when they announced they would be taking their first steps into the hospitality industry with the launch of their first ever MUJI hotel in Shenzhen. Reports from The Guardian were followed by coverage from CNN, as details emerged about the hotel that opened on the 18th January in Futian district.

The first ever Muji hotel is faithful and true to the aesthetics and style associated with all Muji products. The hotel “seeks to provide a space supporting both body and mind while away from home” and “a physical experience of the Muji philosophy through the sensation of towels, the placement of outlets and light switches, restaurants and menus, spaces, and more”. In short, the ethos of the hotel is summed up as, “anti-gorgeous, anti-cheap”.

The hotel consists of 79 rooms and there are five different room types to choose from. In line with Muji’s minimalistic and no-logo approach, the room types are simply designated as Type A, B, C, D, and E. For those wishing to have an idea of what each room is equivalent to in a more traditional hotel, the sizes of the rooms increase with A being the smallest to E being the largest. All rooms are furnished with Muji products that are available to purchase through the brand’s main store. Room rates are currently available from around RMB950.

Guests will also be able to enjoy the classic hallmarks of the Muji brand through the facilities and amenities available in the hotel. Located on the 3rd floor is the Muji Diner, where visitors can enjoy freshly prepared nutritious and delicious meals inspired by home cooking from all over the world. The restaurant is open Sunday to Thursday from 06:30 to 23:00 and 06:30 to 24:00 on Fridays and Saturday.

No Muji establishment could be complete without a Muji store, and the Muji hotel in Shenzhen is no different. With a floor space of 1,726 square meters spread over the 2nd and 3rd floors, the store at the hotel is one of the brand’s largest across all of China.

On the 3rd floor, there is also a small-scale gym offering running machines and aero-bikes while there are also three meeting rooms on the same floor that are available for booking. Another way that the Muji hotel sets itself apart from traditional hotels is with its Library. Muji Books can be found in the public space on the 3rd floor and is open 24 hours. Guests are sure to find something to read amongst the 650 volumes available to borrow.

By choosing Shenzhen as the location for their first ever hotel, Muji has underlined the importance and relevance of the city on the world stage. Be one of the first to experience this unique hotel experience today.

The Art Of Making A Suit By Tailor Tom Bespoke

When we picture a man in a suit, we see James Bond in his black tuxedo in Goldfinger or Don Draper sporting a grey suit during a sales pitch in Mad Men. You can be quite sure that neither man bought their suits off the rack or some tailor who gave them a business card on the street.

They wear the kind of suits that are made by Tailor Tom Bespoke. Having learned his craft over six years working as a pattern maker for prestigious New York custom tailors, Michael Andrews Bespoke, Tom started his own tailors a little over two years ago.

Tailor Tom Bespoke prides themselves on being a traditional tailor that offer 100% custom and handmade suits. Every step of the process is tailored to the customer’s requirements from taking the measurements, preparing the basted fit, allowing for any adjustments, to the final finished suit.

A fine suit begins with the fabric. While tailors in Luohu source the cheapest local material for their suits, Tailor Tom offers only the finest wool, silk, cotton, linen and mohair from Italy and England. Adorning the shelves of his tailor shop are books of fabric from such renowned names as Marzoni, Ariston, and Caccioppoli.

When tailoring a suit, there are countless facets and circumstances to consider. What occasion is the suit for? What time of year will it be? If it is a wedding, is it being held indoors or outside? Will the suit be used on the one occasion or regularly? As you listen to Tom roll off a list of questions he will ask his client, it becomes clear that he is a man who sees things from every angle and plans for every eventuality.

His encyclopedic knowledge is displayed when asked to advice on some hypothetical clients. For shorter gentleman, he normally suggests to wear a one button jacket to create an impression that they are taller. Clients who have a little extra weight should stay away from checkered patterns and look for striped designs that give an altogether leaner appearance. When he is working with his Chinese customers, he warns them against using brown material as it is unsuitable against their skin tone. For weddings, he recommends the groom to wear a navy suit to complement the bride’s white dress.

Tom will ask these questions during the first meeting with the client. After an appointment is booked, Tom will talk with them about not only what suit they want, but also about themselves. He takes the measurements and together they will check the fabric. Around two weeks later there will be the basted fitting. If the fitting goes smoothly then the suit can be put into production and be ready within the hour. If some small adjustments are required then a further fitting can be scheduled.

For those planning to wear a suit for a wedding, Tom also offers free of charge to change the lapels of the jacket afterwards so that the suit can be worn on more than one occasion. After all, it would be a shame to wear such a suit only once.

No tailored suit is truly complete, however, without a pair of handmade shoes to go along with it. As Tom shows a choice pair of brogues, it’s clear that just as much careful craftsmanship goes into the shoes as does the suits.

Whether you are planning on being dressed like James Bond at a wedding or wish to turn up to the office looking like Don Draper, Tailor Tom Bespoke will help you tailor your next suit to the occasion and your personality.

Every piece of clothing is handmade by the tailor, including the passion of the tailor for the advanced customization industry, and the temperature of the fingertips.
