Michael Montgomery Granlund
May 28th, 1955 – February 21th, 2008
It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Michael “Mike” Montgomery Granlund to natural causes on February 21th, 2008. Mike is the beloved husband of Grace Barbara Ozaeta Granlund and father of Damian, Jason and Joshua Granlund. Mike was born in South Shields, England on May 28th, 1955. He is survived by his parents Derek and Margery Calvert and his sister Christina Pinder and brother Guy Granlund. Mike is an alumnus of Reading University, in Reading, England.
Mike lived his life fully, generously and with joy. He will be remembered as a loving husband, terrific father, devoted son, loyal coworker, and good friend to many who will miss him greatly. Mike’s career with Timex spanned more than 20 years. He was most recently Project Manager for Timex’s operations in China. Previously he had worked for Timex’s Philippine operations. In addition to a distinguished career, Mike was a 32nd degree Free Mason in the Scottish Rights Order as well as a Knight Templar.
Truly a renaissance man, Mike spoke French, German, Spanish, Cebuano as well as Chinese and his native English. He has lived abroad for many years in the Middle East and Asia and has been an active participant of many expatriate organizations including Director of the Shenzhen Wine and Cheese Society and Grand Master of the Cebu Hash House Harriers. He was an accomplished sportsman excelling in sea kayaking, sailing and motorcycling.
Music played a big part of Mike’s life. He loved jazz, blues, rock and much to Grace’s surprise recently hip hop. The Mike and Grace bon vivant team were known by all as wonderful hosts and entertainers. They were always the first to throw a party and share a joke with friends. Mike had an intelligent and inquisitive mind. Wherever he and Grace travelled he was keen to explore and enjoy different cultures.
Mike will be remembered for his great style and panache, his wit and his kindness. He was a man who never raised his voice in anger or failed his friends or loved ones. He was respected by all that knew him and will be deeply missed.
Memorial Services are planned for Wednesday. We will update the web site when details are confirmed.
