Beware of Drunk Drivers – Don’t Drink & Drive

ShekouDaily   |   December 31, 2018

Be careful on the streets tonight. Watch out for drunk drivers and think twice before getting behind a wheel after drinking.

In order to strengthen the road traffic order control of the city during the New Year’s holiday, the Shenzhen Traffic Police launched yesterday a 72-hour campaign to crack down on all kinds of serious traffic violations.

Just last night, the Shenzhen traffic police had already encountered 4,396 traffic violations, including 31 cases of drunk driving, 1008 illegal traffic violations; 53 illegal electric vehicles; 1779 pedestrian non-motorized violations; and 1525 other general traffic violations.

Serious Penalties for Drunk Driving in Shenzhen

It’s difficult to find clear and up-to-date information about the exact penalties for traffic offenses in Shenzhen. However, this December 2017 article entitled: “DUI cases released to remind drivers,” by Han Ximin of Shenzhen Daily, has a fairly clear description:

According to the law, people who drive while their blood alcohol content is between 20 mg/100 ml and 80 mg/100 ml will face fines between 1,000 yuan (US$151) and 2,000 yuan and have their driver’s license suspended for six months.

If their alcohol content is at or above 80mg/100 ml, the driver is committing a crime and will be disqualified from driving for five years as well as facing a jail term between 1 and 6 months. If the drunk driver causes a major accident, the driver will be criminally prosecuted and disqualified from driving for life.

How much is too much?

If you’re unsure whether you’ve had too much to drink, you probably have. It doesn’t take much to put you over the limit. Here’s a couple of handy charts provided by the U.S. National Traffic Highway Safety Administration. Both of these charts assume one drink equals 1.5 ounces of 80 proof liquor (40% alcohol), 12 ounces of beer (4.5% alcohol), or 5 ounces of wine (12% alcohol).

The .02 number in the charts, for example, equals the 20 mg/100 ml format used in the description of the penalties above. .08 equals 80 mg/100 ml.

We hope you have a safe and wonderful holiday.
