Expat Child Actress from Shenzhen Premieres Film at Cannes Film Festival

Sophia Higgins, 12 year old female actress from Shenzhen, China, attended the Cannes Film Festival in France to premier her new film, Asleep.

This is the second time at Cannes for Sophia, born to an American Father and Shanghainese mother, both currently residing in Shekou, Shenzhen. She attended for the first time last year.

The 72nd Cannes International Film Festival is being held from May 14 to May 25, 2019.

Sophia’s film premiered at 11:30 am on May 16, 2019 at the official Cannes La Licorne cinema in Cannes, and on May 21st, at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes.

The film, directed by millennial, female director Meng Lin, highlights the spirit of female independence and tells a story about the lack of love and self-salvation in a young women’s growth. The film’s heroine, 18 year old Xia Meng, is played by 12 year old Sophia Higgins.

For those wondering about the dress she wore on the red carpet, Sophia tell us it is the work of famous artist Jiang Feihong.

The film will continue to enter film festivals at home and abroad and plans to premier in China at the end of 2019.

Last year, Sophia told ShekouDaily that her dream was to one day play a part in an internationally distributed film that her friends and relatives can see on screens in their own home towns.
