May 1st is here again, and in China this means a long weekend. China is celebrating International Labor Day and this year May 1st falls on a Sunday and in China if a holiday falls on a weekend it will be celebrated on the following working day which is, in this case, May 2.
Labor Day in China used to be called Labor Day Golden Week. This was done by the government not only to give its billions of workers time off for relaxation but also to encourage spending and keep the economy afloat. In the year 2008, the government abolished this and reduced Labor Day to 1 day and replacing the other days with three other holidays namely Qing Ming, the Dragon Boat Festival and the Mid Autumn Festival. This move spread out the holidays and avoided a long disruption of business activities.
This is a great day for going around China as the weather is very agreeable. It is not too hot and humid. It is springtime in China so the flowers are starting to bloom and everything is turning green.
Chinese love to celebrate so expect a lot of people flocking the streets merry making.
A lot of people take advantage of this time to travel and unwind. To make sure you end the holidays on a high note please keep in mind the following labor day safety tips:
Drinking is always a part of celebrations but it does not mean it is an excuse to go over your limit. Bear in mind that alcohol makes one weak and destroys one’s perspective. So drink responsibly and stay sober to enjoy the party as long as it last.
If you need to be driving, make sure you are within the speed limit. A lot of car accidents are due to over speeding. Remember that lots of people are out on the streets at this time who wants a respite like you. If you have been drinking do not drive. Ask someone to do it for you. This will ensure that you reach your destination.
Although it is not too hot in China, it is still common sense to keep yourself safe from the sun. Use umbrella, sunscreens, light clothing and hats to avoid sun burn.
