Top Places to Go for Trivia Night

Nathaniel Johnson   |   August 29, 2021

Many times when you’re living in a big city or visiting a big city it becomes hard (sometimes) to find a great spot to mingle and make new friends. Shenzhen has become a great hub full of weekly restaurant events, white collar mingles, beach parties, pool parties – and the list goes on. These types of events are great when you’re planning to go out with some friends, however, if you are a last minute planner who decides at the end of the day to find somewhere fun to mix and mingle, quiz nights are for you. Luckily, there is a growing community of quiz night locations all over Shenzhen that is perfect for making new friends, winning great prizes or enjoying quiz night specials. These are great events that happen on a weekly basis and are extremely fun to be involved in, but sometimes can be hard to find. Luckily for you – the reader, I have done quite a bit of research and have had my share of lost quiz nights (couldn’t win one game but had a blast).

Evil Duck (Every Thursday at 8:45 PM – 10:30 PM)

Evil duck has recently opened in the Futian area and has gained quite a bit of popularity for their specials, amazing food and their quiz night. I first heard about Evil Duck in a foodie group as everyone was talking highly about the food (namely their Lasagna) and later on I would find out that they were also doing a quiz night every Thursday. There are usually around five teams competing for the main prize, which is six bottles of craft beer (roughly 1 per team member).  While you are enjoying the spoils of trivia war, or secretly retreating to google to verify your answers, be sure to check out their trivia night specials such as Barbeque Ribs and Beer combo which is only 130RMB (originally 153RMB).

Frankie’s, Nanshan (Every Monday at 8:30 PM – 9:15 PM)

Frankie’s is well known in Shenzhen as a great bar with great western style dishes of which my personal favorite is the buffalo wings. Walking into quiz night, you would think you’re walking into an old country bar fight with team members screaming across the bar to argue their point in an effort to sway the quiz night host. It’s a loud and fun night with constant drink specials being shouted out throughout the evening of questions, frustrations, and laughter. At Frankie’s the host is changed on a weekly basis just to mix up the entertainment and the prizes are:

1st place: RMB 300.00 bar cash to spend.

2nd place: A tower of Asahi beer.
3rd place: A pitcher of Asahi beer.

Also, the best team name prizes are RMB 300.00 cash for 1st place and a pitcher of Asahi beer for 2nd place

Frankie’s Futian (Every Wednesday at 8:30 PM – 9:15 PM)

Same rules and set up as the one in Nanshan. The only difference is that the hosts are different, so you’re more likely to get a different variation of questions and surprises (best team name prize, etc.). If you miss Monday night at the Nanshan branch, you can always reschedule for Wednesday’s at the Futian branch.

Kings Bar. (Wednesday‘s & Sunday’s at 8:30 PM – 10:00 PM)

King’s Bar is a new bar in the Bao An area that has been gaining popularity fairly quickly. This is quite possibly due to their quiz night that toggles between Wednesday & Sunday evenings. During quiz night they do half price specials on their pizzas and offer 5 bottles of beer for RMB 100.00. The quiz night consists of questions concerning movies, food, and geography etc., all of which are posted on screens around the bar.

The quiz host is swapped out just to keep things alive and surprise prizes are offered each week at the host’s leisure. 1st prize last week was a tower of Asahi, 2nd prize was a bottle of wine and 3rd prize was some free shots. The food at Kings Bar is western style food with a few specialty items (lamb chops, fish & chips, mushroom puff soup, etc.).

George & Dragon British Pub (Every Tuesday at 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM)

These quiz nights are usually made up of eight rounds of different themes with each round having eight questions with a break in between. The first round is always a picture round and the 5th round is usually a music round. It’s also good to note that Tuesdays are also “Burger & Beer” night at George & Dragon which means from 5:00 PM – 10:00 PM all burgers are RMB 10.00 cheaper than normal and come with a free pint of Asahi, Carlsberg or Tiger beer. Also available on Tuesday is the special stuffed burger! This is a burger with three stuffings of your choice. Stuff your patty with bacon, mushroom, cheese, onion, green peppers or any other stuffing you can think of.

The prizes are below:

  • 1st Place: Bottle of Whisky (Brand will change each week)
  • 2nd Place: Bottle of House Wine or round of craft beer.

McCawley’s (Every Wednesday at 8:30 PM – 10:45 PM)

The Shekou location has been around for over thirteen years and has quite a bit of history in the SeaWorld area of Shenzhen.  Their menu consists of mainly western dishes including burgers, salads, pasta, Tex-Mex, pizza, steaks and other western favorites. They have recently started their quiz night on 12th July and have had great success since with nine teams participating led by quiz host Liam. During the night, pizza and frozen margarita’s are half price. The prizes are:

  • 1st  place: A RMB 500.00 loyalty card.
  • 2nd place: A RMB 200.00 loyalty card.
  • 3rd place: A RMB 100.00 loyalty card.

  • 2nd  place: 6 points
  • 3rd  place: 4 points
  • 4th  place: 3 points

The Brew (Wednesday’s 8:30 PM – 10:30 PM)

The Brew originally opened in Guangzhou five years ago and opened its COCO Park location about a year ago.  They are known for their live music events, sports events, weekend parties and quiz night. If you are in the CBD area of Futian and want to make some new friends during an epic battle of quizzing, be sure to check them out.  Dan has been hosting the quiz nights for the past six months and the prizes are as follows:

  • 1st prize: 1,000RMB to spend at The Brew.
  • 2nd to last place: A tower of Tiger beer.

The questions are broken up into general knowledge, current affairs, and music. There is usually a picture round as well. The host randomly chooses all questions, so each week is full of surprises. Something pretty good to note is that wings are half price during quiz nights.

In Conclusion:

In making this list, it is apparent that Shenzhen currently has quiz night on Monday’s, Wednesday’s, Thursday’s, and Sunday’s around the city. This list is obviously bound to change as new locations will open their own quiz nights, but this is the best list that I could find during my research. If you know of a location that is also doing a quiz night but is not on this list, feel free to leave a comment and let us know and we will update the article.
