The second season of the Wyndham Grand Kids Activity was a howling success. With a theme of puppy dogs plus scrumptious food, games and competitions, the children who attended had a ‘pawesome’ time!
There was even a real live puppy to greet the children as they arrived!
Puppy balloons surrounded the outdoor garden of the lobby lounge and decorated the tables. To top it off, a stage was set up at the front with a huge ‘Discover the Cutie Doggy moment’ display.
Exciting objects and gifts could be found on every table, including pots of modelling clay in a range of bright colours for the children to play with. Wyndham Grand mugs were carefully wrapped as an additional gift for the adults at the event, although some of the children were so excited they unwrapped those as well!
One of the competitions was for the best clay model made during the afternoon, which almost all of the children (and some of the parents!) took part in.
The models showed off some very creative skills and great imagination. Puppies, chicks, ladybirds and snails were just a few of the creations displayed for the competition – it was very difficult for the judges to decide the winners!
The prizes were giant soft toy dogs, ready and waiting for a new home. They found their new homes with a green dinosaur, a multi-coloured hedgehog and a lime with a tiny hedgehog and carrot on top.
Even the food was puppy themed. Doggy-licious desserts – some in the shape of the most popular dog breed in China, the Shar Pei – made a mouth-watering display.
Mini plant pots filled with sponge cake, crunchy flakes, fruit and chocolate, complete with a tiny spade; heart shaped chocolate truffles; all kinds of macaroons; puppy-shaped biscuits; mini waffle cones filled with fruit cream; chocolate, fruit and nut balls covered in purple chocolate; and frozen lime and pineapple-shaped desserts were a selection of the delights on offer.
The dessert display was completed by a pink chocolate fountain with marshmallows, jelly sweets and fruit skewers all ready to dip.
As for the main courses, every appetite was catered for. From finger sandwiches and BBQ chicken wings to kung bao chicken and sushi, an eclectic mix of Chinese and Western cuisines was on offer.
No kids’ activity would be complete without a ball pool, and the Wyndham Grand was no exception. Kids of all ages had a pawsitively fantastic time playing with the inflatables, balls and balloons.
The final competition was a ‘fetching’ game where the children had to find and retrieve small blue boxes. Each box contained a piece of paper with a number which could result in a prize – from small red puppies to giant 2m long soft, fluffy dogs all ready and waiting to be taken to their new home.
As usual the Wyndham Grand staff were ever present, helpful and involved with the event and the children.

For many expats, what makes or breaks a move to a new country is the community they meet there. One cannot underestimate the importance of having a friend to go to the bar for a drink or to grab a coffee during the day. It can make a world of difference if you know some people you can ask for help or advice, be it finding where to buy the food they like from back home or to take them to the hospital after an accident.
If someone is fortunate enough to find this sense of community when they move to a strange new place, then they are more likely to stay longer and start to feel like they have a found a home away from home. It’s that same sense of community that the Shenzhen Women’s International Club (SWIC) has been providing to the ladies of our city for over 30 years.
We sat down with President Yvette Taylor and Programs Chair Christyne Holmes for a coffee and a chat to find out more about what SWIC is about and what it offers to the expat women in the local community.
“It started in 1986. It was just a few ladies who met in somebody’s lounge in Jingshan. Two years ago we did quite a few big events to celebrate the 30 years. There are no original members left, but we do have some photos,” explained Yvette.
Christyne had heard about what it was like back when SWIC started. “At that time, in the Shekou area, there were a lot of oil and gas companies, so my guess would be that it came out of that. There were a lot of expat ladies, or expat families, that were living here, and they don’t really know how to communicate locally. They didn’t speak Chinese. They had just moved here. That time, wasn’t like it is now.”
SWIC has come on leaps and bounds since it was first formed, but it fundamentally represents the same values. Their mission statement can be found in their leaflets, but Christyne sums it up well during our chat.
“I think our goal with SWIC is to offer the gals support. These women are the anchors for their husbands and kids and they feel like they are running around, taking care of and solving all the problems. Grocery shopping alone can be a challenge in a new country where you don’t speak the language. Any additional special needs can make acclimation and adjustment even more difficult. I like to think of it as a soft place to land. You can come here and ask whatever questions. You can vent. You can get rejuvenated. Then we put you back out there.”
“We recently had an event and some of the new ladies were really struggling. If you’ve never been to Asia before, it is a culture shock. So we are there for them if they want someone to chat to,” added Yvette.
The group has grown tremendously over the years, which is reflected in the original name of Shekou Women’s International Club being changed to the Shenzhen Women’s International Club it is today. The amount and variety of activities now held offer members something interesting to do every day during the week.
“Every Tuesday morning 9:30 to 11:30 we have a coffee morning. It’s usually at the Hilton, except for the third Tuesday of every month where we go to the Marco Polo in Futian. At our Hilton coffee we generally have over 50 ladies, on some occasions more than 70. The Marco Polo coffee is popular with a lot of our members that live in Futian and have kids, but we also get a lot from Shekou. Generally, there are 50 ladies there.
There’s also a book club, which meets once a month on a Tuesday evening. Most of the books are, some fiction, some non-fiction, but right now we are reading one about a Chinese wife and American husband bringing up their son in Shanghai,” explained Yvette.
Mothers with young children form a significant percentage of the members in SWIC and they are well taken care of.
“So we have a large Mom’s and Tot’s group. That is a lot of support for those with preschool kids. Every week they make play dates. It’s every Wednesday or Thursday and it’s someone different every week. It alternates between different apartments. They had a big Easter party recently and you wouldn’t believe how many people were there. It was crazy,” recalled Christyne.
Yet that represents just a small fraction of the work SWIC puts in to arrange activities for their members. Christyne gave a breakdown of what happens in a typical week.
“Monday they have the hiking group. Tuesday we have the coffee. Wednesday they play tennis. Thursdays they usually do another hike. Monday and Wednesday they do archery. Friday we do mahjong. And then we sprinkle in other activities along the way. A couple of weeks ago we made dumplings in my house. We had 15 or 16 gals who came to my house for that. At the weekend we are going to the Opium War Museum.”
The women of SWIC also enjoy their parties and members can be sure to have a few large events to be arranged each year.
“We had our farewell lunch on the 22nd of May. It was a chance to say farewell for the summer and to those who were leaving Shenzhen. That was at the Westin. We had the ballroom there for a late morning lunch with a wonderful buffet and sparkling wine. 90 Ladies attended,” said Yvette.
“Then in September, we will have our welcome breakfast. A way for everyone to get back into the groove,” added Christyne.
Even putting the weekly activities and the great parties aside for one moment, SWIC is worth joining for the great discounts members can enjoy at more than 50 restaurants, bars, shops, spas, and other businesses you are sure to come into contact with during your time in Shenzhen.
“This is worth the cost of the membership alone. Because if you go to McCawley’s and get 5% off then it adds up over time. It adds up pretty quickly,” explained Christyne.
Charity work forms an important part of the work that SWIC does, so those who want to give back to the local community can find a platform to do so at the club. Yvette went into detail about the assistance they provide.
“We support three local charities; Captivating, Promised Land, and Sunshine Academy. We budget at the start of each year and we set out an amount for each charity. That can either be given to them at the end of the year or if they want to use it throughout the year. What we’ve also done this year are three coffees where – they usually cost 50RMB – the members have it free, but then we have a charity bucket. So we’ve raised 3 or 4,000RMB each charity coffee just by doing that.”
SWIC boasts a large membership, but it’s not one that is dominated by any one clique. As is stated as part of their mission statement, ‘there is no typical SWIC member. We are women of all ages, with or without children, working or not working for money, seasoned or first-time expats’.
“We have over 250 members at the moment. There can be up to thirty different nationalities on a bus during a trip,” explained Yvette.
When asked about the makeup of those 250 members, Christyne is keen to express the diversity. “I would say American is probably the largest nationality and then maybe French. Our mahjong group just cracks me up. We have women from Belgium, France, Korea, Japan, America, New Zealand, and Australia.”
“It’s amazing that everyone gets on so well. I don’t know anyone that is cross with one another. In 250 people, I don’t know if there is any bad blood or poor relations. Which is pretty amazing when everybody is from different walks of life,” she added.
Perhaps the best possible note to finish on is to simply leave you with a quote from the SWIC mission statement, which sums up all the good work the women at the club are doing.
‘The purpose of Shenzhen Women’s International Club is to promote social and cultural exchange between the women of the expatriate community in Shekou and throughout Shenzhen. This is done through meetings and activities in the spirit of mutual understanding and friendship.
SWIC provides a focus for social and cultural activities for members and is of particular value to newcomers by serving as a means to meet other expats, find resources, and share tips and information about living in this city.

It’s not really in a writer’s self-interest to say that a review is easy or that some reviews write themselves, but you do occasionally have the opportunity to write about a place you are sure readers will love. The Sunday Brunch at Capri at Sheraton Dameisha Resort is one such place.
Living in Shenzhen can be stressful and tiring. We live busy lives in a city that doesn’t seem to sleep. Even the best of us can feel like we need a holiday or a break from it all sometimes. With Capri’s Sunday Brunch, you can feel like you’re taking a holiday without having to leave Shenzhen.
For RMB464, diners can enjoy an all you can eat brunch buffet in the hotel’s Capri restaurant. The brunch runs from 11:30 to 15:00. Upon entering the restaurant, there is a children’s play area. The kids will be occupied for hours drawing pictures and watching movies. In the middle of the restaurant is the stage where the band plays a hit-filled set and the Colombian musicians provide a soundtrack to the brunch.
The first thing you notice, however, is the restaurant’s stunning, panoramic view of Dameisha beach. With the option too of dining outside on the balcony, diners can really soak in the atmosphere.
All along the other side of the restaurant is the brunch buffet. And what a spread it is.
The buffet begins with the drinks bar as you enter the restaurant. There you will find it generously stocked with ice cold bottled beer, bottles of the house red and white, and the ability to make your own cocktails from the choice of spirits. There are also soft drinks and fresh fruit juices available.
From there we head to the would-be starters. Some highlights include the Greek Salad with Feta Cheese, Roasted Lamb Loin with Cherry Tomatoes, and Marinated Tuna Fillet with Mustard Honey Sauce. The cold cuts and cheese board is worth a visit also. Choose from the likes of Toscano Ham, Smoked Pork Loin, and Capocollo. Pair that with a cheese board offering Camembert, Gouda, Emmental, and Gruyere.
With the sea so near, it’s perhaps no surprise that seafood features heavily on the brunch menu at Capri. And the restaurant does not disappoint.
The sushi station is one of the busiest areas of the buffet and with good reason too. The chef is on hand to make cuts from the selection of the freshest Tuna, Salmon, Sea Bream, and White Tuna. Positioned right beside the sushi and sashimi, diners can find the shellfish chilled on ice. The selection there reads like a wish list of any seafood lover. Choose from Prawns, Conch, Alaskan King Crab, French Oyster, and Scallop, to name just a few. All are presented in the eye-catching centerpiece replica fishing boat.
Capri also showcases local seafood delicacies. One chef stands by a dedicated station where he conjures up local favorite Sea Urchin Fried Rice on the spot, while on the other side, another chef is preparing Abalone dishes.
There are plenty of options too for those who would prefer something other than seafood. Western diners can make up a Sunday Roast to rival that they are used to back home. Choose from Grilled Beef Steak and racks of Lamb with Olive Lamb Jus to pair with Parsley Baby Potatoes, Butter Vegetables, and Grilled Mushrooms.
Meanwhile, there is more Chinese fare to be savored. Try the juicy Shanxi Hamburger, delicious Peking Duck, or make your own bowl at the Noodle Station. Capri even has its Dim Sum so make sure to try the Har Gow or Char Siu Bao.

Be sure to save room for dessert too. After all, being at the beach is the perfect excuse to have some ice cream. You might need to get a bigger bowl once you see the flavors on offer from New Zealand Natural. For those with an insatiable sweet tooth, there are still plenty of other desserts to explore from Black Forest Cake and Strawberry Cheese Cake to Walnut Brownies and Napoleon Slice.
It’s truly a brunch to be savored at a leisurely pace. Relax with the family or catch up with friends. With the brunch running for over three hours, there is plenty of time to sample all the dishes on offer and make the most of the open bar.

Fred Cooke, from Meath, mixes comedy and music, and in his own words looks so much like an older, not as attractive Ed Sheeran that he claims to visit the The A-Team singer-songwriter on Christmas Eve pretending to be his ghost to warn him of his future.
Kevin McGahern, a Cavan man, slips effortlessly between surreal stories that would fit comfortably into one of his sketch shows (One gag begins with him being held at knife point by a drug-addled teen and ends up with him in the criminal’s house having tea with his Ma) to the driest of humor that sometimes even goes over the audiences head (“I’ve nothing against the immigrants coming over, but I will say that they brought with them bigotry”).
The third stand up, and tonight’scompère, is the insatiable Karl Spain, who hails from this writer’s hometown of Limerick, and his wit is as sharp as the city’s unwanted reputation. Whether it’s making borderline jokes about the IRA (Comparing the organization to the band U2 because both “did some good early stuff but they should have packed it in a long time ago”) to mercilessly tearing some hecklers to shreds (anybody in the front rows, be warned), Spain is one very, very funny man.
All three comedians do a fine job at finding that balance to their material and recognizing their audience. Most jokes, naturally, are tied in with their Irishness, but they are never too obscure so to feel like it’s an in-joke with the Irish in attendance, and at the same time, the gags aren’t diluted for the audience as to lose their punch.
To be fair, the crowd in Shenzhen aren’t exactly used to coming together like this for a comedy show and so it does take a bit of time for everyone to feel each other out a bit, not just in relation to the comedians. But with the drinks flowing and the laughs coming, it’s not long before McGahern, Cooke and Spain have the crowd in good spirits.
By the time all three comedians take to the stage to end the night by playing a song together – “A traditional Irish song to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day,” as McGahern puts it – the crowd are ready to sing along. Half the audience are expecting The Fields of Athenry, or some Dubliners or Pogues, but the song goes in a most unexpected and hilarious direction, which takes the crowd a few seconds to twig on too. I won’t say what the song was, but once those in the audience had caught up, everyone was chanting along in unison.
With three massively talented Irish comedians coming to visit us here in Shenzhen, it truly was the perfect warm up for St. Patrick’s Day and a rare treat for any comedy lover in general.
The Kidz With Heart event presented by Captivating International and Shenzhen Charity Federation was a resounding success. Celebrating its 10th year, Captivating International has grown from strength to strength, developing charity projects around the world. This successful organisation was started in 2008 as a Hong Kong Charity with partnership links to Australia and the US. From there, founders Andrew and Julie Colquhoun, took the idea of helping impoverished children from remote villages in China, and over the years this charity work has extended to include seven different provinces throughout China as well as Kenya and Nepal.
The first of two annual events, the 7th annual Kidz With Heart event held at Shekou International School’s Jingshan Villa campus on Saturday 17th March, had more than 175 children from 29 countries taking part in a fantastic day of sports. A range of different events comprised the mini Olympics for children aged from 5 to 11 years old, with each child taking part in seven activities. Basketball shoot, soccer shoot, long jump, bean-bag toss, 3-legged race, a limbo competition and archery were a few of the exciting events on offer. Children and adults alike cheered on the participants and everyone competing received a T-shirt, a medal and a goodie bag for their efforts, as well as a great sense of achievement. The winners of each event also had the chance to display their country’s flag on the winner’s podium while being presented with their gold, silver and bronze medals at the end of the event.
In addition to the brilliantly organised events, delicious food was also on offer. Trafalgar from Shui Wei, Futian, provided hot dogs, burgers, kebabs and fries; Artisans Pizza provided – yes, you guessed it – pizza and Maximo provided creamy gelato, all at reasonable prices. You had to be an early bird to sample the ice cream though as it sold out before 11.30am! The second-to-none organisational skills of the volunteers organised by Gary Ellis from Shenzhen College of International Education (SCIE) at this first event ensured that everything ran swimmingly. The next event will have volunteers from Shen Wai International School (SWIS), International School of Nanshan Shenzhen (ISNS) and The Academy, with Tim Mitchell and Chu Qi starring in the role of MC.
We haven’t got the final figures yet, but Kidz With Heart is hoping to raise around 350,000RMB over both weekends this year. All funds raised go to a range of charity projects run by Captivating International, with a focus on helping impoverished children in China reach out for a better tomorrow. These projects are the Healthy Village Program which provides health information, medical checks and basic healthcare supplies to remote villages; Greenhouses for impoverished families; Vocational High School Scholarships which sponsor girls to finish high school; My First Job Program, sponsoring girls who never had a chance to go to school to become a chef or home services worker; and Pig Project where two breeding pigs are given to a single-parent family or families with physical disabilities in remote villages.
This is such an important cause that it’s worth popping along just to eat pizza or a burger and cheer on the children competing – even if you don’t have children yourself! [Haikou, Hainan Province, China – 16 March 2018] In the mid-1930s, a celebrated German aviator called Wulf-Diether Graf zu Castell-Rüdenhausen flew over China with his Leica camera, recording stunning landscapes, natural features and historical monuments. For more than 80 years his photos have remained undiscovered and unseen – until now.
On April 7, Mission Hills Group, owners and operators of the world’s largest golf and leisure facility, will launch the ”China Flug” (meaning China Flight) photography exhibition at the luxury Mission Hills Haikou resort on the tropical Chinese island of Hainan.
On display will be several precious and historical photos which have remained unseen to the world for many years, amazingly found at Castell’s family home. These photographs record incredible images of old China through the power of aerial photography.
Visitors will experience a special exhibition encapsulating the past and blazing a new trail towards a brighter future in photography. They will witness a side to China not seen before as China’s beauty and diversity are displayed for all to see.
Castell has become a legend, not just because of his aerial photography but also because of the precious images he captured. With his Leica camera he was able to capture China through a tumultuous time. He flew over cities, countryside, rolling hills, ports and residential areas including riverbeds and farmlands which were previously undocumented. He was able to encapsulate the spirit of the time with great style and panache and will be remembered as an amazing pioneer both as an aviator and a photographer.
The “China Flug” exhibition will run from April 7 for 45 days at Mission Hills Centreville in Haikou. Entry will be free, in celebration of the 30th anniversary of Hainan’s status as a province.

These days, Shenzhen has so many different restaurants offering all kinds of cuisine from all over the world. You can find almost anything you desire from the more popular Italian and Frenchrestaurants to the up and coming styles from the Middle East and also South America.
One cuisine that has been conspicuous by its absence in Shenzhen, however, is Spanish food. For all the Italian pastas and Indian curries you can try, the city has been criminally short of places offering pinchos or paella. That is all about to change with the arrival of El Toro in Houhai.
Opening in the bustling hub of Houhai, El Toro is situated just beneath Coastal City. The restaurant façade stands out from the other shops with its silhouette of a stampeding bull.
Inside, the tables are decked out with dinner mats made from the red and yellow of the national flag of Spain. The bar is reminiscent of some cantina in a small town in the countryside, with a couple of plates of omelet tortilla left out to be washed down with beer from one of the three taps of draft.
Above the bar are a row of photos showcasing El Toro’s signature dishes, while the Rojigualda flags on the table double as menus. They reveal an extensive list of authentic Spanish dishes that hail from all over the country from the greenery of Galicia, through the heart of Catalonia, to the sleepy seaside towns of Valencia.
Salim, one of the restaurant’s owners, is on hand to introduce the menu. Raised in Madrid, but with family from Barcelona, there were always arguments when El Clasico was being played. Yet it also meant that Salim grew up enjoying food from both the Castile and Catalonia regions, which later saw him develop a passion for the cuisines from all over the Iberian Peninsula.
Working alongside Salim is his chef, Alejandro. With Basque roots, Alejandro arrives at El Toro having spent years working as a chef in Spanish restaurants across the world. Time spent in restaurant kitchens across Central America was followed by two years at a restaurant in Tokyo, before Salim brought him to Shenzhen to help him realize his vision.
A selection of dishes are ordered based on the recommendations from Salim, and while Alejandro prepares the meal, a jug of homemade Sangria is brought to the table and shared. The punch drink, made of wine, mixed fruits, sprite, and no small amount of vodka, is enjoyed all over the Iberian Peninsula whether it is day or night. This pitcher, prepared by Salim personally, goes down deceptively easily.
As another round of Sangria is poured, the dishes begun to arrive. The first to be presented is the Mix Salad and Garlic Shrimp. Garlic Shrimp is a favorite of the Andalusia region and is authentically and lovingly recreated here, while the Mix Salad consists of tuna resting on a bed of the freshest tomato and crispest lettuce.
Next served is the Omelet Tortilla, a true staple of Spanish cuisine. The famous Tortilla Espanola is served cold just like it would be found if you walked into any local cantina back in Spain.
Not long after, Salim returns from the kitchen with one of El Toro’s signature dishes and what would be described by many as the national dish of Spain. It is of course, the rice dish of paella. The Chicken & Rabbit Paella is served, but there are five varieties in total to try on the menu from including the Spicy Shellfish, the Black Rice with Squid, Chicken, Pork & Shellfish, and the iconic Valencian Fiduea.
After much food and conversation, the plates are cleared away and stories are shared about time spent in Barcelona over another cup of Sangria. Just when it seems not possible to eat anymore, three delectable looking desserts are brought out and quite miraculously everyone has rediscovered their appetite. The Catalan Cream is perfectly sweet, and although the Bread Pudding and the Tarta Santiago prove popular too, there is no beating the crème brulee from Catalonia.
El Toro is the Spanish restaurant that Shenzhen has long been crying out for. With an owner from Madrid and a chef from the Basque country serving up dishes from Galicia to Catalonia, you are unlikely to find a more authentic Spanish dining experience in the city.
There are few better feelings than walking into a bar when the band is in the middle of their set. The guitarist screeching out a solo and the frontman singing like it’s his last time. The crowd up on their feet and dancing along.
It’s the same feeling you get when you watch the band at The Terrace. It’s a group of musicians that are very much a family, and this month the family just welcomed three exciting new members. Shenzhen Party went along one night to say hello to singers Monica Cuenco and Kris Astor, and drummer Mark Jasper.
That night, the first musician to take the stage is drummer, Mark Jasper. He’s arrived early to check the instruments and to talk with the technicians. It’s clear he’s the kind of meticulous musician who wants everything in its right place.
Considering his background, his attention to detail is no surprise. He later explains. “I started out as a drummer in the Philippines back in 2004. I’ve recorded and played for recording artists like Zelle, Gloc-9, Ney, Jay-R, and international artists like Taylor Dayne.”
Taylor Dayne was a pop superstar from the eighties with classics such as Tell It To My Heart, while rapper Gloc-9 and R&B artist Jay-R are award winning, platinum certified stars in the Philippines.
The set begins without their new female singers, but the band here are a versatile family of musicians. They ease into the evening with a funk laden cover of Ed Sheeran’s Shape Of You. Guitarist, Douglas, then turns singer for a cover of Cake By The Ocean, and although there may not be any cake on hand, the crowd are already having a great time at Seaworld. The band throws in some crowd favorites from Bruno Mars’ covers to a raucous rendition of Smells Like Teen Spirit.
The one constant through all the wild improvisations and guitar solos is Jasper on drums. Like all the great drummers, he keeps them all in line and ties it altogether. Just like his idol, Vinnie Colaiuta, the legendary session drummer who worked across heavy metal, jazz, and country, with artists such as Frank Zappa, Sting, and Joni Mitchell.
Yet Jasper still wants to grow more as a musician. It was one of the reasons that brought him to The Terrace. “When I saw some videos of their bands performing here, I knew that I would learn and grow a lot as a musician from being under the supervision of the musical director, Leon.”
They say good things come to those who wait, and half way through the first set Monica and Kris are brought up and welcomed to the family. Kris bursts into a belter of a rendition of Sia’s Cheap Thrills, and Monica swoons on backing vocals.
As Kris struts around the stage with a wide smile and singing, “Baby, I don’t need dollar bills to have fun tonight”, you better believe she means it. As she says later, “I am more into R&B and soul, but when it comes to party then it’s all about rock! Expect that I will be giving my best every night!”
It’s an attitude that she’s carried with her ever since she started out as a singer. “I joined singing competitions as a training ground. That brought me to become a finalist of Pinoy Pop Superstar, a singing competition on GMA 7. They signed me as an artist and I became a part of a concert TV show every Sunday. I sang with famous singers like Jaya, Ogie, Alcasid, Janno, and Kyla.”
The highlight of her career was the chance to perform with her hero. “My proudest moment was singing on stage with my idol, Ms. Regine Velasquez. She has been my inspiration since I was kid. So performing with her is like a dream come true for me.”
Regine Velasquez would no doubt approve if she could see Kris now as she gets the crowd bouncing along to her electrifying cover of Nena’s 99 Luftballoons.
Next, it’s Monica’s time to step up, but the singer is no stranger to the spotlight. She may still be young, but she has already grabbed headlines and won competitions across Asia.
In 2011, she was a runner up on Star Power, the search for the next female pop star, on Philippines channel ABS CBN. From there she landed a role as Dorina Pineda in a theater adaptation of the show Bituing Walang Ningning and starred in the South Korean reality program K-Pop Star. Her performances have seen her win Best New Female Artist award at the ALIW awards in 2016 and Best Pop Recording and Best Song Arrangement at this year’s AWIT awards.
Monica lists Beyonce as one of her idols, and when she moves across the stage during a cover of Starving with all eyes in the bar on her, it’s impossible to deny she does not have the same gravitational pull as the former Destiny Child’s singer. When she sings the chorus, “I didn’t know that I was starving till I tasted you”, the crowd sing along in agreement.
Her biggest role model comes from her home of the Philippines. “The artist that influenced me a lot is Lea Salonga, a theatre actress. She’s really good when it comes to vocal techniques.”
The band finishes their set, but come back for a second later. They play some classic hard rock along with modern EDM and everything in between, leaving the band and the crowd breathless at the end. As the band hug and leave the stage to a cheering crowd, it’s clear to see that Monica, Kris and Jasper are already part of the family at The Terrace.
In the time since Les 5 Chef’s opened its doors in Shekou, the fine dining restaurant has built up a reputation for its high quality cuisine at reasonable prices. So when they announced the opening of their new restaurant called Les 5 Chef’s Miznon, naturally it caught the curiosity of many a food lover in the city. Shenzhen Party went to check out the latest culinary endeavor.
At first glance, Les 5 Chef’s Miznon is probably not what most people would have been expecting from the people behind the original Les 5 Chef’s. The interior consists of exposed foundations with bright graffiti and blackboards of food specials. From the Hong Kong style open style bar, hip music plays onto the streets where there are the neighboring hole in the wall restaurants and stores.
One of the restaurant’s partners is Harry, who spent 35 years opening restaurants, hotels and cruise liners before embarking on Les 5 Chef’s. For him, Les 5 Chef’s Miznon has a very clear and distinct concept. “Les 5 Chef’s is international fine dining. Here, at Les 5 Chef’s Miznon, we make gourmet street food. It’s Middle East style. We serve roasted vegetables, chicken, stuffed pita. Its high quality ingredients, high quality taste, for a reasonable price.”
The idea for Miznon came about when Harry kept receiving requests from customers at Les 5 Chef’s. “We have a lot of Israeli customers and they came to me many times, ‘Harry, we love your food, but can you do our food.’ I was many times before in Israel and I know how to make their food so I said, ‘Yes, but we will make a completely different concept to the 5 Chef’s.”
“It took time to find the flavor. Israeli taste is very specific so we adapt the food so that everybody likes it. For example, for the Chinese taste, we will give a little bit of spiciness inside, so the customer can order it spicy if they want to have spicy or not.”
In fact, it is from the restaurant’s Israeli origins that the restaurant takes its name Miznon, which means ‘Canteen’ in Hebrew. Although to refer to Miznon simply as a canteen would be to do a disservice to its extensive and exciting food menu.
Customers can choose from twenty four different pitas including meat, seafood, and vegetable fillings. The Roasted Chicken is one of the stand-out items on the menu, which goes well with any of the ten roasted vegetables dishes. That is all without mentioning any of the soups, salads or noodle dishes.
Harry is asked to pick out some of the most popular dishes. “For me, it is the Lamb Chili Onion Pita. We use only the Lamb Tenderloin so it is very soft. The next one is the Falafel Pita, because we have lots of options for vegan people and vegetarians coming here. There is also the Roasted Cauliflower. First it is cooked, then roasted. We use only Greek or Australian olive oil to roast it. It is one of the best sellers.”
While picking the roasted tomatoes straight from the vine and as you try the roasted cauliflower and ask yourself if cauliflower has always tasted this good, one thing starts to become clear; Les 5 Chef’s Miznon uses only the finest, freshest and healthiest ingredients. “Our beef is coming from Australia. Our vegetables we pick up every two days from a farm four hours from here by driving. The hummus, every day we make fresh three times. We peel the chickpeas. It’s a lot of work, but it’s much smoother this way.”
Another element of the concept at Les 5 Chef’s Miznon is the complimentary sauce station, which customers are encouraged to take advantage of. “We have here 8 sauces. We have for European tastes and Chinese tastes. We give the recommendations, but I really have to say that they find their own taste,” explained Harry.
Yet to say Les 5 Chef’s Miznon is somewhere only to come to enjoy a meal would be only part of the story. It’s as much a place to meet friends to chat over some drinks. The restaurant boasts draft craft beer all the way from Ingolstadt, in the heart of Bavaria. Herrnbrau is available in four different beers and cannot be found anywhere else in China, let alone Shenzhen. At RMB20 for 300ml, it’s most likely the best value you will find around too.
The spirits menu is equally generously priced and well stocked. When you can get yourself a rum or gin for RMB25, it’s no wonder then that many customers end up staying at Les 5 Chef’s Miznon long after they have finished their meal. As Harry says, “What we do is we close when the last customer has left. So sometimes we are open till three or four o’clock.”
