Green Oasis School – The Great Fire of Shenzhen

At Green Oasis, we have had a focus on fire safety this year.  Our Year 2 “Fire and Ice” topic gave us the opportunity to take this to the next level.  As a British curriculum school, one of the History units covered is the Great Fire of London. The children discover and discuss what living conditions were like at the time and then investigate how the fire spread.  As a practical experiment, they build houses in art and (safely) set fire to them to show how the fire happened.  This year, we had very special guests as the Tianmian Fire department came to not only give a fire safety talk but also to put out the fire.

The houses students had created were the biggest ever built (by Year 2)

So the firemen prepared the hose.

Mr Li very bravely started the fire, though it seemed very reluctant to start – we are sure the Great Fire did not take this long to catch and spread.  Once the houses were firmly ablaze the firemen set to work.

Something that the firemen very quickly proved is that it is very hard to put out a fire as it seemed to take quite a long time.

Once the fire was safely out – and the firemen kept checking to make sure – they gave a safety talk including a demonstration as to how to escape from a fire.

Following the demonstration, the firemen bravely withstood the questioning from our intrepid Year 2 fire investigators before returning once more to keeping Tianmian safe.

Our thanks go to the Tianmian fire brigade for their help in keeping our village safe and for the excitement of their visit.  We look forward to their return next year when a new group of fire investigators study fire safety.
