The Hong Kong government held a “Hello, Hong Kong!” launch ceremony earlier to attract tourists. It announced that it will distribute 500,000 free air tickets to visitors. Starting today (17th), the Hong Kong Tourism Board will open applications for free air tickets to travel agencies. In the first phase, 10,000 round-trip air tickets to Southeast Asia will be distributed.

However, these tickets are not completely free. Tourists must first pay for one ticket before they can redeem another one for free in a “buy one get one free” format.

In preparation for the plan to distribute free air tickets at Hong Kong International Airport Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Airlines and HK Express have entrusted the Tourism Board to allocate more than 50 000 free air tickets to Hong Kong travel agencies in six phases. The first phase of 10 000 air tickets will benefit cities including Bangkok Thailand Singapore Kuala Lumpur and Penang Malaysia Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam Jakarta and Surabaya Indonesia Phnom Penh Cambodia and Manila and Cebu Philippines.

The Tourism Board has opened applications for the first phase of free air tickets to travel agencies starting today and will close next Wednesday (22nd). At the same time it is stipulated that only travel agencies with relevant experience can apply including those who have recruited three tour groups or at least 30 individual travelers to Hong Kong in the past five years.

Yang Shufen Secretary-General of the Tourism Board introduced that more than 200 travel agencies participated in yesterday’s briefing and the market response was enthusiastic. If there are too many applying travel agencies a lottery will be drawn with each city receiving at least 20 tickets.
