“On November 18, Guangzhou reported 8,713 new locally transmitted COVID-19 cases, of which 17 were detected outside the controlled areas. The remaining infections were detected during quarantine, in high-risk areas, or among key people under closed-loop management,” said Zhang Yi, deputy head of the Guangzhou Municipal Health Commission.

Among the new cases, 8,444 were asymptomatic cases, 269 were confirmed mild or moderate type cases.

Haizhu District reported 8,475 local infections, mainly concentrated in high-risk areas of Fengyang’s Kanglu, Nanzhou’s Datang, and Huazhou’s Longtan. Recently, new cluster epidemic points have emerged in the adjacent areas of Kanglu and Datang, which indicates that the surrounding areas are facing spillover and spreading pressure from high-risk areas.

Yuexiu’s Kuangquan Subdistrict has been reporting new cases recently, the epidemic is still developing. There are sporadic cases in other Subdistricts, and the risk of community transmission persists.

The epidemic situation in Liwan, Panyu and Tianhe districts is generally stable, and there have been sporadic imported cases in the past 2 days. “We need to be vigilant against the risk of community transmission,” said Zhang Yi.

In Baiyun, Huangpu, Huadu, Nansha, Conghua and Zengcheng districts, the transmission chains of the earlier local cluster epidemics have been basically blocked. The above-mentioned districts will gradually resume normal production and life.

At present, some Subdistricts in Baiyun, Panyu and Liwan districts have been adjusted to low-risk areas. “The early cluster of epidemics in Liwan, Baiyun and Panyu districts has been basically stopped, which can be reflected in the Rt value (the effective reproduction number),” said Zhang Zhoubin, spokesman of the Guangzhou CDC.

The Rt in Panyu and Liwan has been declining for 8 consecutive days and remained below 1 for two consecutive days, at 0.8 and 0.9 respectively; In Baiyun, it has also remained at 1.0 for two days before falling to 0.9 today.

Zhang added, “Regarding the epidemic in Haizhu, we have seen that the number of new cases is still relatively large, that is because the Rt has fluctuated between 1.5 and 1.7 for 9 consecutive days.”
