Correcting improper translations

Zhang Li (2nd R), deputy chief of Shenzhen Fairy Lake Botanical Garden, introduces plant species at the garden’s Youxi Valley to language experts Saturday. During the trip to the garden to review its bilingual signs, experts organized by the Translators Association of Shenzhen (TAS) gave suggestions on the proper use of English expressions for bilingual signs in public areas. In the latest move to standardize bilingual signs, Shenzhen urban administration will conduct a general survey over signs in parks across the city and correct improperly translated ones. According to Wu Xuewen, TAS vice president, the quality of bilingual signs in public areas such as roads, service counters and parks have improved greatly, thanks to correction efforts in recent years.
