SHENZHEN University (SZU) has designed a three-step development strategy to build itself into a world-class innovative university by the middle of this century, Mao Junfa, president of SZU, said Friday when he met the press for the first time after taking office this February.
“The first step is to become a high-level key university by 2025. The second step is to build SZU into a high-level university of global influence. The third step is to build it into a world-class innovative university,” Mao said.
When asked to define what a world-class innovative university is, Mao observed that there is no fixed answer. However, for SZU, it should first play an irreplaceable role in contributing to the city’s development and the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).
“Shenzhen University is a local university so it should contribute to the city’s development just like how Standford University and the University of California, Berkeley have contributed to Silicon Valley’s development in the U.S.,” Mao said.
He also said that SZU should strive to produce a number of original major scientific achievements with global influence.
“The fundamental goal of university education is about talent cultivation, so SZU should shoulder the responsibility of cultivating high-quality talents,” Mao added.
As a local university, many SZU students are from Guangdong Province and most of them chose to work in the GBA after graduation. In view of this, Mao said it is understandable, but also stressed the importance of global outlook in order to build itself into a world-class innovative university.
