The railway operator has doubled the capacity of transporting supplies to two trains a day since Wednesday, with a train carrying 1.88 million COVID-19 test kits to Hong Kong from Pinghu South National Transport Hub.
Since the train was put into service March 2, a total of 227 tons of freights containing mostly test kits, protective clothing and blood cell analyzers, equivalent to 114 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), were sent to Hong Kong, data released by Shenzhen Customs showed Wednesday.
Starting from Wednesday, the service was doubled to two times a day.
“Shenzhen Customs has set up a liaison mechanism and designated employees on duty to ensure customs clearance efficiency and punctuality,” Li Xiaolong, deputy chief of the inspection section of Sungang Customs of Shenzhen Customs, said.
The operator, Sinotrans Ltd., said that the service could be increased to four to five trains a day depending on the situation in Hong Kong.
In another development, Shenzhen resumed livestock supply to Hong Kong starting from Monday by transporting 8,295 pigs to Hong Kong via Wenjindu Checkpoint in three days.
After quarantine and customs clearance, the livestock kept in Qingshuihe transshipment warehouse administrated by Guangnan Holdings Group Co. Ltd. were transported to Wenjindu Checkpoint, from where the pigs were handed to Hong Kong drivers driving back to Sheung Shui. The trip from Qingshuihe to Sheung Shui takes about two hours.
According to Hong Kong Customs, 90 percent of the pigs in Hong Kong were imported from the mainland.
“Every day since resumption of the service this week, we provide about 1,300 pigs, equivalent to the level before resumption,” said Wu Weiji, deputy office director of Guangnan Holdings Group Co. Ltd.
In addition, nearly 50,000 tons of supplies including daily necessities and medical materials, equivalent to 8,500 TEUs, had been shipped to Hong Kong by Thursday through the three sea routes that have been put into use since Feb. 21.
