Shenzhen has made scientific arrangements in terms of medical treatment and services to ensure the health and safety of patients amid the COVID-19 pandemic, a health official said at a press conference Thursday.

Lin Hancheng, a senior official from the Shenzhen Municipal Health Commission, said that the city has worked to meet citizens’ normal medical service demands and ensure the treatment of severely and critically ill patients and those in need of emergency treatment.

The city has updated fever clinic information in a timely manner so that citizens can go to their nearest fever clinics for diagnosis and treatment.

It has also optimized the treatment process to reduce the risk of cross infections, according to Lin.

Local hospitals have set up a relatively independent area in their emergency rooms, and a transition ward for patients who are suspected to be infected with COVID-19 but need emergency treatment or hospitalization.

Medical institutions have been urged to properly provide medical services for special groups such as hemodialysis patients, elderly people, pregnant women, children, cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and first-aid patients to ensure their health and safety.

Lin also reiterated the importance of senior citizens receiving COVID vaccinations at the conference, saying that it is “necessary and important” for older adults over 60 to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

According to him, senior citizens over 60 with COVID infections represent a relatively high percentage in terms of hospitalization and developing severe illness. This group also tends to stay longer in hospital.

Elderly people with underlying medical conditions, as long as they are in stable condition and are taking regular medications, can be inoculated with COVID-19 vaccines after a doctor’s evaluation, he said.

Lin also advised that people who undergo home quarantine had better live alone. If circumstances do not permit, they should live in a well-ventilated room, ventilate rooms more often, and clean and disinfect rooms every day.

In case of other emergencies requiring medical treatment during the home quarantine period, they should call 120 immediately and report to the community at the same time.

In order to ensure the normal production and operation of enterprises to the greatest extent, Shenzhen continues to inspect epidemic-related risks of industrial enterprises and parks and strengthen the health management of employees in key positions, according to Hu Xiaoqing, an official from the city’s industry and information technology bureau.

Li Xiaoheng, deputy director of the Shenzhen Center for Disease Control and Prevention, cautioned that preventive measures should be taken to prevent aerosol transmission at home during the pandemic.

Shenzhen reported 23 confirmed COVID cases and 37 asymptomatic infections from 12:01 a.m. to 12 p.m. Thursday.
