During the visit to India of Chinese President H.E. Mr. Hu Jintao in November 2006, the two countries reached agreement on opening new Consulates General in the other country. It was decided that India would open a new Consulate General at Guangzhou in southern China, while China would open a new Consulate General at Kolkata in eastern India.

Both Governments, placing great importance on this issue, took immediate steps for the operationalisation of this agreement and the opening of the new Consulates General.

India opened its Consulate General in Guangzhou on October 18, 2007.

The consular jurisdiction of the Consulate General includes the provinces of Guangdong, Fujian, Hainan, Hunan, Yunnan, Sichuan and the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
