Bijia Hill Park. A nice respite from the city

Joe Macpherson   |   September 7, 2019

Shenzhen has no shortage of parks, in fact it is officially one of China’s ‘green cities’ because of the sheer abundance of parks, mountains and nature based spots around the city.  The problem with some of these parks is that they can become extremely busy, especially on a sunny weekend, parks such as Lianhuashan can be a madhouse of activity, which is nice, but not if you want a quiet escape. One such option is Bijia Hill or Bijiashan Park.  This is one of the bigger parks in the city, but also one of the quietest. And it is, at least in my opinion, one of the better choices for a quiet break from the hustle and bustle of downtown Shenzhen.

Bijiashan offers some beautiful walking opportunities

What makes this park so appealing is the vast amount of greenery around you, large swathes of grass make it appealing on the eye and fresh for the lungs. There is lots of room for a rest on the grass, a picnic, to play some family games or simply to walk around on and enjoy nature.  And even on a hot day this park is suitable for a daytime stroll because of the large trees and the ample shading that they provide for you.  Long, wide paths make walking around very easy and as with most of the city’s parks, it is very very clean.

For those who like a bit of a challenge this park provides a wonderful view point of Futian, a short but rather steep climb up some steps will lead you to a breathtaking viewpoint where you can gape in awe at the metropolis below you.

There is a rest stop here where you can catch your breath and cool down.  Make sure to bring water as there are not so many kiosks around in this park to buy them from.  After you descend down you can see a bowling green, where the locals gather for a game of bowls and a bit of competition with their friends.  Oh and please beware of the snakes when walking around this park.
