Offering a Unique Blend of the Best Western and the Eastern Education Approaches

Mission Hills International School (MHIS) and Bromsgrove School (Bromsgrove) in the United Kingdom today jointly announced partnership to relaunch MHIS as Bromsgrove School Mission Hills in Shenzhen with enhanced teaching resources and accessibility to time-honoured English education traditions, catering to the growing demand for world-class international education in the fastest-growing city in Southern China. The partnership, based on a unified ethos, entails full-scale collaboration on all levels including school management, teacher recruitment and professional development, curriculum design and enrichment, teacher and student exchange programmes, sporting excellence, university placement and ongoing review and implementation ensuring highest possible quality of educational provision.

MHIS is the educational arm of Mission Hills Group, China’s leading integrated golf, hospitality and leisure group with diversified businesses in golf, resorts, commercial property development, movie-themed parks and real estate. Bromsgrove School, founded in 1553, is located in Bromsgrove Town between Worcester and Birmingham in Central England and consistently ranked as one of the top co-educational boarding and day schools in the UK.

Dr Ken Chu, Group Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Mission Hills Group, stated.

“We look forward to the immense possibilities and opportunities unfolding for our young people in China following the partnership with Bromsgrove School, which is an exceptionally distinguished boarding school in the UK with a long history and rich traditions. The partnership represents another step taken by our siblings towardsfulfilling the legacy of our late father Dr. David Chu to promote education in the country. My father used to donate and sponsor in support of education and sports developments in China, Hong Kong and Canada in hopes of creating a better environment and future for the youth throughout the world. I sincerely wish that Bromsgrove School Mission Hills would contribute to a modern China by inspiring our students to be enthusiastic, inquisitive and passionate about the world, and above all, well-versed in both Chinese heritage and Western knowledge.”

Dr. Catherine Chu, Executive Director of Mission Hills Group as well as of Mission Hills Education, said,

“We are extremely delighted to form partnership with such renowned public school in England as Bromsgrove School, which has a long and remarkable history and outstanding academic achievements. Most importantly, Bromsgrove School and Mission Hills share the same belief in taking a holistic approach to enable our students to acquire the attitude, knowledge and skills to be leaders in the future, to be able to think and solve problems creatively and critically and to collaborate with people with different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. ”

Mr Peter Clague, Headmaster of Bromsgrove School UK as well as of Bromsgrove School Mission Hills, shares,

“Education has the power to transcend the boundaries of geography, politics and ideology that sometimes blind us to the rich offerings of other cultures. Bromsgrove is an ancient and highly respected educational institution in Britain. Having found an immediate affinity for the ideals of Mission Hills Education, we now sense that we have much to offer the children in Shenzhen as well. However, we also believe that we have much to learn from the Chinese way of teaching. To blend these two great learning traditions is an exciting prospect. Bromsgrove School Mission Hills will be the chance to combine two bright lights to a bright beacon of educational excellence in a truly multicultural enterprise.

Together, Bromsgrove School and Mission Hills are on the cusp of creating a unique institution. Underpinned by shared values and a deep commitment to academic excellence, the Bromsgrove School Mission Hills will shine forth, a lighthouse of mutual respect and cultural co-operation for the modern age”.

Dr. Catherine Chu explained that Bromsgrove School Mission Hills would continue to offer bilingual education with equal emphasis on Chinese cultural teaching and the best English and International curricula. Easy access for the students to the sprawling golf courses and other recreational and sport facilities available in Shenzhen Mission Hills contributes to all-round development of students.

A governing board, with members both from Mission Hills Group and Bromsgrove UK, has been set up to oversee the school. The school will include Pre-School, Prep School and Senior School.

It is anticipated that at full capacity Prep 1 to 6 and Senior 7 to 12, Bromsgrove School Mission Hills will enrol 1600 students divided fairly equally between the Prep School and Senior School divisions. On entry to Senior School, students will be introduced to the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) and progress towards the Diploma Programme (DP) in their final years. Chinese national syllabus is integrated into the curriculum from primary to junior high school levels, from grades 1 to 9.

About Mission Hills International School (MHIS)

Having long been an enthusiastic supporter of education, Mission Hills Group has been actively engaged in educational philanthropy and community activities. Mission Hills Group has contributed substantial financial support to various universities in China. For example, recognizing a shortage of professionally trained physical therapists for the Beijing Olympics, Mission Hills Group solely funded a Masters’ program co-developed by Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Central China University of Science and Technology. Additionally, the Group has instituted a new discipline of “Asia-Pacific Studies in the 21st Century” and the David Chu Scholarship at the University of Toronto. Other significant endowments to education at home and abroad include funding the establishment of Physical Education & Sports Science School in South China Normal University, substantial donations made to a number of Hope Elementary School projects in China, and the sponsorship for a Public Management Program at the University of Western Ontario, to name just a few. In 2012, in honour of the Founding Chairman of the group, the Group has established a Dr. David Chu Memorial Fund in support of education, sports and disaster relief.

Mission Hills International School (MHIS) was created under this context and is committed to the pursuit of excellence in education through a cross cultural approach, blending best practice from Western and Chinese approaches. The MHIS Mission Statement echoes this through focusing on critical thought, intellectual development and the pursuit of excellence in its many forms. MHIS’s vision is to build world-class K-12 school that focuses on innovation and student outcomes.

Mission Hills International School (MHIS) is designed as a bi-lingual, co-educational through-train day school for students from Kindergarten (age 3) to University entrance and a day and boarding school for students from grade 7 and up.

MHIS, together with Bromsgrove School, plans to open the Prep School and the Senior School in September 2017 and September 2019 respectively. The new Prep School (Prep 1 – 6), with state-of-the-art facilities, will encompass a well-resourced library, large multi-purpose room, advanced science and technology labs, spacious studios for music, art and dance, a recreation quadrangle, rooftop garden and playing area, playing fields, and a 400-metre outdoor track. The new Senior School (Senior 7 to 12) will add student and teacher dormitories, an auditorium, indoor swimming pool, all weather gymnasiums and other specialist facilities to the overall development.

Moreover, the School’s proximity to Mission Hills’ Eco & Sport Park, Boris Becker-Mission Hills Tennis Academy, 12 professional golf courses, and Ice Castle NHL-sized ice rink further expands students adjoining access to distinctive sports facilities and resources. Therefore, as part of a robust and multi-pronged Physical Education programme, we will use these facilities to introduce golf, tennis, and ice skating to all students. And, for those wishing to develop their game to a higher level, elite junior golf, tennis, figure skating and ice hockey academies that run parallel with the academic programme will be offered as students progress through the School.

The campus is located in a tranquil, serene, and ecological friendly environment. By car, it is only 30 minutes from Shenzhen City Centre, 1 hour from Hong Kong and 1.5 hours from Guangzhou. A nearby MTR station is due to open in 2018.

The school, which is now 540 years old, was first mentioned as a Chantry School in 1476 and was re-established as a Tudor grammar school between 1548 and 1553. It shares an historic link with Worcester College, Oxford, in its coat of arms and motto, based on those of Thomas Cookes of Norgrove. John Day Collis became Headmaster in December 1842. The tercentenary of the grammar school was celebrated on 31 March 1853. In 1856 Collis had the chapel and new school rooms built, and existing buildings enlarged and improved.

In 1869 Bromsgrove was one of the fourteen founding schools of the Headmasters’ Conference. During the Second World War the school was moved temporarily to Llanwrtyd Wells in Wales, and its buildings used by British government departments. In 2002 the school established Bromsgrove International School Thailand (BIST) in Thailand.

In Bromsgrove’s most recent Inspection in 2016, the Prep and Senior School were rated EXCELLENT in every category. Pupils at Bromsgrove UK study the Creative Curriculum in the Prep and Pre-Prep moving to IGCSEs and then onto A levels and IB in the Sixth Form. Academic results are outstanding.
